The Explorer II was built for people working where the sun does not reliably rise — cavers, polar researchers, anyone who could lose track of whether it was noon or midnight. The answer was an independent 12-hour hand read against a fixed 24-hour bezel, so day and night are never in question. Reference 16570 is the long-running steel version of that idea, with a black dial and the Oysterlock bracelet's Easylink extension for the days when the wrist swells.
