It would be an understatement to say that watchmaking is hard work. Physically, it requires excellent eyesight; mentally, it calls for tenacity, precision and the relentless pursuit of perfection. But a watchmaker will tell you that it is not just a job, but a calling. Specifically, it is a calling to pursue the art of watchmaking, which has its roots deep in the history of Switzerland and which continues to develop at a rapid pace today. The life of a watchmaker revolves around his art and his art around with him. Such is the case for Franck Muller.
Born in the very heart of watchmaking capital, La Chuax-de-Fonds in Switzerland, Franck Muller demonstrated his talent during his school years at the Ecole d’Horlogerie in Geneva. After graduation, he then established himself as a reputable restorer of precious, unique pieces, serving private museums, auction houses and leading collectors from around the world. Gaining abundant knowledge from historic timepieces, he turned to the design of wrist watches and complications with a fresh eye.
He established his very own watchmaking haven in 1995 called the Watchland, located in the village of Genthod. Under one roof, his never-before-seen ideas are realised by himself and a team of outstanding designers, artisans and watchmakers. Patents and World Premieres like Calibre 93, 94, the Révolution 2 Tourbillon and Calibre 98 have all been created in the name of “Franck Muller Watchland.” Everything takes place right here: from design and engraving, to dial and case production. The Watchland cordially welcomes the world press every year at the World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie, with catered lunches, factory tours and in-person interviews.
To Mr. Muller, watchmaking is not a mystery, but time is. He believes that it is a human invention that helps us organise our days and nights. Time is also relative, a concept that continuously drives his designs. Another thing that distinguishes a great watchmaker is passion for life. Most watchmakers from the world’s best manufacturers today are young people who are fervently curious of everything around them. Meeting Franck Muller gave us great insight into the brand. This is a man who is not only well-travelled, but also believes in transforming acquired experience into something creative and personal. Thus for him, watchmaking is ultimately an act of self-expression. This fact is what sets the brand apart.
So, when you purchase a Franck Muller watch, it’s a fruit of labour of many years of know-how, months of design and weeks of production. Above all, it is the result of daring innovations, inspired by the life experiences of an outstanding watch designer and maker.
